Pathophysiology
Clinical meaning
Tracheostomy care involves maintaining the patency and cleanliness of the artificial airway and surrounding stoma site. The warm, moist environment around the stoma promotes bacterial colonization and skin breakdown if not properly maintained. Inner cannula cleaning removes accumulated mucus and biofilm that can obstruct airflow. Proper trach tie management prevents accidental decannulation while avoiding excessive pressure on surrounding skin. Consistent, skilled care prevents complications including infection, granulation tissue formation, and tracheal stenosis.
